Cartridge Heaters' General Construction
1. Heating coil
The heating coil is the actual resistance, where the electrical load occurs. The most common metal alloy used for this purpose is a nickel - chromium mixture, which also known as a Ni - Cr alloy. The Ni - Cr alloy wire is wound around a ceramic core, and the number of spirals per inch varies with the required watt density. The potential AC power supply can be 2 - phase or 3 - phase, heating the wire via flowing through the coil of nickel chrome wire, which in turn will heat the cartridge heater sheath.
2. Insulation
Insulation is used for preventing the Ni - Cr coil from touching the sheath. If this occurs, it will ground the resistance and may lead to a catastrophic short circuit, which will result in a sheath melting, even an equipment failure. The damage can be mitigated if fix the ground fault interrupt circuit. In order to keep the coil away from contacting the sheath, the coil is built in the sheath and at the same time filled with magnesium oxide. In order to ensure that the magnesium oxide fills the gap between the sheath and the coil, the cartridge heater is filled with vibration.
3. Sheath
The sheath is to build connect with the material or substance to be heated. According to the application conditions, metal alloys of several types can be used, such as highly acidic or corrosive conditions. The most common types of sheaths are 304SS/316SS/Incoloy800.
4.Sealing
Once the cartridge heater is been filled with magnesium oxide, the open end of the cartridge heater then need to be sealed. This prevents the coil and the magnesium oxide from coming out, as well as preventing contaminants such as plastic debris, air, or moisture from entering the heater.
5. Termination
The cartridge heaters are generally fixed in all kinds of machines, manufacturers must design the heaters to fill certain gaps. The cartridge heaters might be terminated with the straight leads, or in a right angle. Also, manufacturers need to pay attention that the leads cannot be exposed to the environment where the temperature is higher than the maximum rating for the lead wire. To avoid these conditions, the lead wire can be protected with a metal conduit, braided metal or silicone sleeves.
6.Lead wire type
Glass fiber is a common cartridge heater and other high temperature applications such as automotive wiring harness and industrial equipment. Other variants are silicone impregnated fiber glass and silicone rubber. This is a kind of wire.
