An electric water heater Over-temperature Protection Switch is a temperature-sensitive safety switch and a core safety component. Its core function is to serve as a secondary line of defense by forcibly shutting off the power supply if the main thermostat fails or the water temperature rises abnormally, preventing serious accidents such as burns, tank damage, or even explosion. It typically requires a manual reset to serve as a warning.

Structural Components:
A typical temperature limiter consists of the following components:
- Temperature Sensing Surface/Probe: This probe contacts the water heater tank or heating element and is responsible for sensing temperature.
- Temperature Sensing Element: This is the core component, typically a bimetallic strip or memory alloy spring.
- Lever Mechanism: This amplifies tiny deformations of the temperature sensing element, generating sufficient force to actuate the contacts.
- Electrical Contacts: These are the actuators, typically a set of normally closed contacts.
- Reset Button: Located on the housing, this button allows the user to manually reset the temperature.
