The Water Heater Parts Magnesium Rod, also known as the Anode Rod, is an important component in the storage electric water heater used to prevent corrosion of the metal tank and soften the water quality.
Working Principle:
The magnesium rod is primarily composed of magnesium. In a water heater, it comes into contact with water along with the metal inner tank (primarily composed of iron). Because magnesium is electrochemically more active than iron, according to the electrochemical corrosion protection principle of sacrificial anode protecting cathode, the magnesium rod, acting as the anode, preferentially reacts chemically with corrosive substances (such as chloride ions and oxygen ions) in the water, corroding itself and thus protecting the metal inner tank, which acts as the cathode, from corrosion.
Main Functions:
- Anti-corrosion: Absorbs oxygen ions and divalent ions in hot water, reducing dissolved oxygen in the water, slowing corrosion of the metal inside the water tank and extending the life of the water heater.
- Water Softening: Chemically reacts with calcium and magnesium ions in the water, binding them together to form insoluble precipitates, reducing water hardness and minimizing scale formation.

Where to Install the Magnesium Rod
As shown in the figure,
unscrew the cover of the Sewage Outlet of the water heater in the figure above,
insert the magnesium rod into the water heater and tighten it.

Magnesium rod is commonly known as magnesium anode, also known as anode magnesium block, used to prevent corrosion of metal inner vessels and soften the water quality of magnesium rods. In the water vapor, the metal inner vessels are made of Taisteel or manganese steel, and the cathode principle is sacrificed by the electrochemical corrosion protection of metals. The magnesium rod is used as anode and the metal inner vessel is used as a cathode. In this way, the primary cell is formed by a conductive water medium between the cathode and the anode. The anode of the battery is consumed by corrosion, while the internal conductor of the cathode is protected.
